January is traditionally the time when new lifestyle goals are set. For many people these goals include changing eating habits and incorporating a healthy eating program into their routine. New Year, new you, right? If you are on the path to cleaning up your diet and eating right, it might be a smart idea to include jerky. Jerky fits nicely into a low carb high protein diet and this makes healthy snacking decisions real simple.
Jerky is a pure protein that is low in carbs and many jerky varieties are low in fat. Bison jerky, or what we call Buffalo, Fish, Turkey and Ostrich are all low-carb and low fat. Jerky is also high in protein which is important for brain function, cellular structure and bone and muscle building. An added bonus to jerky is that the high protein content digests slowly which makes you feel full for a longer amount of time -more so than say, a carbohydrate. You can feel the difference between a bagel and a pack of beef jerky about an hour after you’ve eaten it.
The Mountain America brand also uses half of the salt found in commercial manufacturers brands, so even salt restrictions can be addressed when including jerky into your eating plan.
Cutting portions and eating smaller meals does not have to be a chore. Try including some pure protein like our jerky as a snack in between meals or as a meal replacement altogether. Many jerkies are also high in iron which everyone needs for energy and to bolster your immune system. By snacking on the occasional jerky, you may just find the energy and pick me up that you need. Protein is important for brain function, cellular structure and bone and muscle building.
Keep jerky on hand as an important part of your low carb and high protein diet and sticking to that path to clean eating might just get a little bit easier.
